Breeding Approach

Our Thoughtful Breeding Approach

At Woodward Bulldogs, we take a careful, veterinarian-assisted approach to breeding our French and English Bulldogs:

  1. Careful Timing: We closely monitor our females’ heat cycles and use progesterone testing to determine the optimal breeding time.
  2. Safe Breeding Method: We use surgical artificial insemination, a method recommended for Bulldogs to ensure their safety and health.
  3. Veterinary Oversight: All breeding procedures are performed by our experienced veterinarian in a clinical setting.
  4. Focus on Health: Our process prioritizes the well-being of our dogs at every step.
  5. Post-Breeding Care: After the procedure, we provide attentive care to our females to support a healthy pregnancy.

This approach allows us to maintain the health of our Bulldogs and the quality of our puppies. We’re happy to discuss our process in more detail with prospective puppy parents who are interested in learning more.

Our Pregnancy Care Process

At Woodward Bulldogs, we take great care in supporting our pregnant French and English Bulldogs throughout their journey to motherhood. All our dogs receive daily multivitamins to maintain optimal health. As the due date approaches, typically about 30 days out, we transition our expectant mothers from adult to puppy food. This dietary change ensures they receive the increased nutrients needed during late pregnancy and early nursing. In the final week before the expected due date, we introduce Oxy Momma vitamins to further support the mother’s health.

Knowing that Bulldogs can sometimes go into labor early, we maintain constant vigilance. Our expectant mothers are closely monitored through a combination of frequent in-person checks and camera surveillance. This attentive approach allows us to be prepared for any scenario, ensuring the safety and well-being of both mother and puppies. Our commitment to careful pregnancy management reflects our dedication to breeding healthy, happy Bulldogs.

Our Delivery and Birthing Process

The typical gestation period for dogs is 63 days. However, for French and English Bulldogs, natural birth can pose significant risks to both the mother and puppies. At Woodward Bulldogs, we prioritize the safety of our dogs by opting for planned cesarean sections.

We typically schedule the C-section 1-2 days before the expected due date. This procedure is performed at our trusted veterinarian’s office, where the mother receives expert care throughout the birthing process. Our team works alongside the veterinary staff to ensure each puppy is carefully dried and placed on a warming pad immediately after birth.

Once the procedure is complete and the puppies are stable, we transport the new mother and her litter back to our home. This controlled approach to delivery allows us to minimize risks and provide the best possible start for our Bulldog puppies.

Newborn/lactation process:

English bulldogs:
For the first 1-2 weeks, we separate English Bulldog puppies from their mothers to prevent accidental injury. Our family takes on the crucial role of assisting with feedings every four hours, ensuring each puppy receives adequate nutrition. The newborns are kept in a carefully monitored whelping area with a heat lamp maintaining a temperature of around 100 degrees.

French Bulldogs:
French Bulldog mothers typically only need to be separated from their puppies for the first night following their C-section, allowing for recovery from anesthesia. For the next three days, we assist with puppy feedings every four hours. The mother and her litter are housed in a baby pool lined with soft bedding, also kept warm with a heat lamp. French Bulldog mothers are generally attentive and can care for their puppies independently from about four weeks onwards.

Vaccination process and miscellaneous health information:

We follow a comprehensive health care regimen for our French and English Bulldog puppies:

We use Panacur wormer at 3, 6, and 8 weeks of age, administering it for three consecutive days each time.

Vaccinations:

  • Neopar vaccinations at 4, 5, and 7 weeks
  • Nobivac combo vaccine (covering distemper, parvo, and influenza) at 8 weeks

Veterinary Check-up: Around 6 weeks, all puppies undergo a thorough health examination by our veterinarian.

Like all purebred dogs, Bulldogs may have certain genetic predispositions. Some characteristics we monitor include:

  • Brachycephalic features (such as compact airways)
  • Potential for umbilical hernias
  • Occasional occurrence of cherry eye
  • Possible delayed testicular descent in males

We carefully screen for these and other health factors during our veterinary check-ups. Our breeding program aims to minimize these traits where possible, while maintaining the lovable Bulldog characteristics.

Our Gentle Weaning Process

At Woodward Bulldogs, we begin transitioning our French and English Bulldog puppies to solid food around four weeks of age. We start by offering moistened Purina Pro Plan Focus puppy food fortified with formula, served twice daily. Simultaneously, we introduce a water bowl to encourage independent drinking. The puppies continue nursing from their mother until six weeks old, gradually increasing their solid food intake. By six weeks, they’re typically eating moistened puppy food twice a day and have access to water through a licker spout in their living area.
